Concern about suggested changes to Barrington Road

UPDATE: The council have listened! They are now pausing for a rethink. The plans discussed below will  be reviewed.

We were very surprised this week when the council told us they have made plans for temporary changes to Barrington Road.

The plans are to change the junction at Gaskell Road and Sandiway Road. Barrington Road would be split at this point. Traffic will be able to use the road on either side, but not to travel the whole length of Barrington straight from the A56 to the A560. This is to make it safer for people to walk and cycle while we are being advised not to use the trams and buses.

Usually we would be asked for our opinions in advance on a big change like this. However, this didn’t happen this time around. We understand that this is due to the Covid-19 emergency. The Government has told councils to make emergency temporary changes to roads.

We have been working hard ever since we heard this news. Residents are worried it may make other nearby roads into rat-runs or have other unintended consequences. We have raised these worries with the Leader of the council and others.

Many local residents have told us how worried they are about safety and air pollution on Barrington Road. We really think that changes are needed to make it safer. But we want to be sure that these are the right changes. We really want to hear your thoughts. Please get in touch with Michael, Dan and Geraldine to let us know your views.

We will be back in touch as soon as we have more information to share with you.
