Greens remain independent on leadership vote in Trafford Council

23 May 2018

Trafford's new Green Party councillors tonight chose to not support Labour's Andrew Western as the new leader of Trafford Council.  Labour relied on support from the Liberal Democrats to secure Western's position, but the Greens have chosen to remain independent of this new administration.

It was a historical night as Green Party councillors took their seats in Trafford Council’s chamber for the first time. It is the first time Trafford has had four parties represented in its 40+ year history.

Cllr Geraldine Coggins, Leader of the Green Party group on Trafford Council said:

“We wish the new administration well. As the first Greens on Trafford Council, we'll work constructively with all parties on issues where we have common ground. Labour do not have majority on council, there will be many close votes and we promise to hold them to account.”

Priorities for the Green Councillors over the next year will include:

- getting a better deal for residents on the Amey contract and the chaos for the bins and highways it has caused;

- standing up for our neighbourhoods and green spaces;

- tackling road safety and air pollution.
