About Us

A Growing Party

It was in 2018 that our first Trafford Green Party councillor was elected.

Since then we now have six elected Councillors.

We now have three councillors in Hale and three in Altrincham, whilst narrowly missing out by 21 votes in Bowdon.

We Achieve Results

By being pro-active and working hard with the ruling party, council officers and local communities, our six Trafford Green Party Councillors have achieved some amazing results.

Here are some of our successes:

Glyphosate-based Weed Killers – In 2019, Councillor Daniel Jerrome argued that the Council should introduce the precautionary principle and stop spraying our streets, parks and green spaces with weed killers linked to cancer and a danger to wildlife and people.

The following year, we succeeded in getting the support of all 62 councillors to eradicate the use of glyphosate-based weed killers across the borough.

The Climate Emergency – In 2018, our resolution was passed to make Trafford Council the first in Greater Manchester to declare a ‘Climate Emergency’.

Reducing Single Use Plastic – In 2018, our motion was passed to develop a robust strategy to ensure Trafford Council phases out single-use plastics (SUP) in its activities within the next two years, whilst working with partners /  large institutions to encourage them in developing similar strategies to reduce SUP.

Improving Biodiversity – With concern over the biodiversity crisis, in 2019 the Council accepted our motion to develop a management policy to improve biodiversity, grassland whilst saving on maintenance costs, and develop a wildflower planting scheme.

Increasing Native Tree Coverage – In 2019 our motion committed the Council to Undertake a year-long audit to identify suitable locations in urban areas to increase tree coverage, increasing native varieties and promoting the Adopt-a-Tree scheme to residents, community groups and schools.

Supporting 20mph Speed Limits – In 2020, our motion was passed that gave Trafford residents with the right to request signed 20 mph speed limits on their streets, and adopt a policy of favouring the implementation of 20 mph limits or zones as a default for all streets in residential areas, town centres/retail districts and roads where vulnerable road users and motor vehicles mix.

Vision Zero – In 2023 we submitted a motion to adopt a clear Vision Zero action plan, with an ambitious target to cut road deaths and serious injuries to zero by 2040.  A policy now adopted by all 10 Greater Manchester local authorities.

A Fair Voting System – Our FPTP voting system is a significant barrier to restoring peoples faith in politics and all but guarantees that the balance of opinion among the electorate is not reflected in Parliament or in council chambers.

We believe a system of proportional representation in which seats match votes and all votes count equally would help to rebuild public trust, ensuring that all political views are represented in Parliament and councils in proportion to their level of public support.

A Greater Manchester Assembly – Although directly elected, Greater Manchester’s mayor is answerable to ten local authority leaders who are appointed by their own party processes.

We want to replace the Gtr Mcr Combined Authority with a new devolved GM Authority, which will include a directly-elected assembly, with election of the assembly by a mixed-member proportional system, similar to that used in London.

We Are A REGIONAL & National Party

In both the 2024 GM Mayoral Election and General Election, the Green Party took 7% of the total vote.

The Green Party now has four new Members of Parliament, and came second place in 40 constituencies.
