Longford Ward Green Party Candidate For Local Elections May 2nd 2024

Margaret Westbrook

Well, we are very lucky locally in Longford Ward that we are to receive several millions of Heritage Lottery funding for our well-loved Longford Park. As a founder member, long serving committee member of Friends of Longford Park and a co-ordinator of the Community Allotment I am delighted by this news. I am also thankful to Heritage Lottery and Trafford Council for enabling this to happen.

Sadly, however, the news is not good either nationally nor internationally.  We live in very worrying times. As a supporter of Trafford for Palestine, I have been impressed by the way our Green councillors have been trying to work across all groups to achieve a motion which was recently passed in Council. This motion seeks more support to bring together those of different faiths and cultures locally, and asks for government to help negotiate an immediate ceasefire as well as return of the hostages - as promoted by the Green Party nationally.

Both nationally and locally we need to prioritise tackling the climate emergency.  I want to leave my grandchildren a world which is habitable for both humans and nature as a whole.  Our hard-working Green councillors brought a climate emergency motion to council over 4 years ago and are constantly trying to ensure that this is actioned across the borough.

The cost of living crisis, growing inequality and savage cuts to local services have made life very difficult for so many local people. I would like to identify ways there could be more support to those in poverty and look with Green colleagues at means to develop a local insulation programme to tackle fuel poverty, create new jobs and reduce energy usage.

As a current volunteer and supporter of Stretford Public Hall, I would give support to ensure our great community centre strives and thrives.

I would be honoured to receive your vote and to work hard for the residents of Longford ward and across the borough alongside the Green Group for the common good of all the people of Trafford.
